5 tips for more sustainable cooking

1. Lid on the pan
If you put a lid on the pan while cooking, you lose less heat and can use a lower cooking setting. As a result, you use 2-3 times less energy.

2. Don't use too much water
Don't use more water than you really need. Potatoes and vegetables, for instance, do not need to be completely submerged. The less water in the pan, the faster everything cooks. This way, you naturally use less energy.

3. The pressure cooker
A pressure cooker allows you to boil water extra quickly without having to use the booster function.

4. Material of the pot
Pots and pans come in different materials. Think of a cast-iron pan or a steel frying pan. When choosing a suitable pan for induction, you need to pay extra attention, as there are materials that are not suitable for induction: aluminium, stainless steel and copper. But even if you want to cook sustainably, the material of the pan plays an important role. Some materials are better at keeping a dish warm while others heat up quickly. In short, it is smart to choose a pan that allows you to cook a dish in the most sustainable way. Steel pans are good for everyday use and conduct heat well. Pottery pans retain heat longer and are therefore ideal for simmering meat or vegetables. Do you love frying meat or deep-frying snacks? Then opt for a cast-iron pan. These do not deform, are long-lasting and can withstand high temperatures.

5. Check the bottom of your pan
The bottom of your pan must be flat to be able to make contact with the induction hob. This is because it does not heat the entire cooking zone but only the bottom of your pan. Over time, some pans become warped. They often still work, but the heat is less evenly distributed. As a result, your dish takes longer to heat up completely.

Although most pans produced today work well on induction, it is advisable to check (older) pans. This is not only more durable, it also saves money.

 

6. Switch back to a lower power setting in time after boiling or searing
